1.
How was 2016 for you?

2016 was an interesting year for both of us. Lots of growth made through many little trials and tribulations on both our parts.

2. Heavy Skies- Down
Can you tell us what your favourite thing is about the new track?

Well, Down, is kind of a cornerstone for us and the heavy skies sound. We feel like it really epitomizes the kind of vibes we at heavy skies are hoping to specialize in. There's definitely a feeling present throughout, but if we had to pick one favourite thing, it would be the multiple flavors we kind of bent into place to make Down rich with emotion.

3.How did Down project get started?

Good question. Haha. Down actually started as a 93bpm hiphop tune. Josh had laid down this tight little 16 bar groove with a vocal sample he had dug out of an ableton live pack. We started playing with the loop a bit adding our other elements and it was going well, we were getting this picture for how the tune would flow. And then we kinda sat on the idea for a few days after. The following week we sat down and within 5 minutes of work we kinda looked at eachother like something was missing. I (Dustin) said to josh 'what about this?' and dropped the bpm to 86 and doubled our snare line and let the loop play. Instantly we knew, this was to be the direction of the track. That oroginal groove is actually heard in the halftime section of Down, right before the second break down.

4. Can you tell us about new project you will be working on 2017?

We have a couple projects in the works for 2017. We're gonna stick to the rough umbrella of liquid dnb, at least for now, but I wouldnt be surprised to find us dipping into some other genres, sub genres and bpm ranges. We're aiming to have some mid tempo freebies out in the new year as well

5. Imagine yourself walking into the studio; please may you talk me through a typical day? What are your habits?

We usually just dive right into whatever either one of us has an idea for.  If we are lucky, we get one sit down session a week, so the focus is very high when we do come together. We try to build and create from a really real and raw place, to instill emotion and feeling into everything we do so despite our intense focus, relaxation, comfort and as little stress as possible in the studio is a huge factor for us to be able to create.

6. How do you go about choosing what software and plug-ins you use?

We are both ableton users so the ease of transferring projects across through file sharing is hugely helpful. As far as plug ins go,  we definitely have some choice selections for certain processings. Some staples in our projects without giving too much away include massive, serum, saturn, and a few meldaproduction freebies. We are also a big fan of some of the ableton live instrument packs. Horns & strings are kind of becoming our thing haha.

7. What’s the one piece of DJ/production gear you can’t live without?

For us, aside from the daw we work in, it would have to be our midi controllers and interfaces. These tools are the most important for our processes because they allow for the real human interaction and feel to shine through in our projects.

8.Any particular artists/dj’s/ producers that really influenced you?

I think we both have pretty similar, but very eclectic tastes in music. I think we try to pull a bit from everywhere, but we are big fans of guys like DJ Marky, DJ Shadow, Utah Jazz, and Bonobo.

9. How’s the CA music scene in this moment?

The canadian music scene as a whole is alive and well. Canada has so so so many talented artist and musicians from all types of musical backgrounds, its remarkable to me how little of them get the recognition they deserve.

Canadian DNB in specific, we feel is beginning  to really thrive. There are a few canadian dnb acts that we've got our eyes on that have pretty bright futures in store, if they can keep their current momentum.

10. Often particular cities are linked to certain sounds and sub genres. Do you think living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is reflected in your music?

Edmonton has a very strong music community which embraces all types and all forms of music. We are a very diverse city of sound, so its tough to say if our music reflects our city, or vice versa. There are little niches and corners cut out for specific sounds and genres but I think as a whole we are on par with how Edmonton music sounds.

One day with Plump Djs - Interview - Inside Young NRG Productions

I know. I'm excited, too.To talk with Plump DJs - - interview them for my Blog!
The Plump Djs are internationally renowned DJ/Producer duo Andy Gardner and Lee Rous of London. Their unmistakable sound has won them remixes from the likes of Deadmou5, Mark Ronson, Moby and Orbital, whilst their four deck live show has led to countless international and national shows.

1) Yes Yes - Can you tell us what your favourite thing is about the new track?

Yes yes : We love the vocal because we grew up with the sound Roxanne Shante and the beats and the grove were inspired by the Pocadots record that rocked our world when it hit the streets.

 2) Can you tell us about new project you will be working on 2016?

2016: We have been working on new Bass/Breaks releases, remixes and singles for Punks record label and others. We have also had the chance to play many great shows. The highlight of the year was closing Glastonbury with the Stantons on the arcadia stage.

3)  Imagine yourself walking into the studio; please may you talk me through a typical day?

We have a structure day 11am - 6pm, writing, composing, arranging and planning. We try and do social media outside of these hours and make sure we have a good plan of work before we start any week.

4) What are your habits?

We start with the ideas, and find the right method of achieving the goals.

5) What’s the one piece of DJ/production gear you can’t live without?

We cant live without our Yamaha NS10's and Genelec speakers, they are our ears!

6) Any particular artists/dj’s/ producers that really influenced you?

At the moment we are being heavily influenced by many artistes on the UK bass scene. Eg Left/Right & Hybrid theory .

 7) How’s the UK music scene in this moment?

Dance music in the UK is flourishing dispite the recent tragic loss of our Fabric Nightclub.

8) Often particular cities are linked to certain sounds and sub genres. Do you think living in London is reflected in your music?
Yes 'music has been the biggest inspiration for us now all our lives. The pace, hustle and unrest of the city plus the love we have for its diverse culture and atmosphere fuels our fire still.

Thanks so much Plump Djs!!! se ya around

Their innovative production style and skillful delivery is consistently embraced on the world circuit. London's premier music lead venues XOYO and The Nest are the current platform on which the duo develop their sound. Self admitted suckers for bass and 'the groove', Gardner and Rous fuse Electro-house, Rave, Acid House, Breakbeat and Techno into their own style they call 'Plump music', the defining ethos for their recently formed Grand Hotel record label.

They have received worldwide acclaim and relentless cross-genre support for some 15 years now. A compelling history of success, cemented by their musical collaborations with legendary vocalists Gary Numan, Jermaine Jackson and Louise Rhodes of Lamb, a ten year residency at Fabric Nightclub and over 1200 international shows. They are true innovators of sound who proudly co-created the popular break-beat genres of the last decade with their initial releases on Fingerlickn’ Records. They are pioneers of production whose shared passion for electronic music and the art of making people dance has inspired a generation of dance floor destroying experiments. The ever-evolving sound of Plump DJs continues to be met with enthusiasm from discerning dance music fans worldwide.

The duo are booked throughout 2013 internationally, touring Canada, USA, Australia, Europe, Asia and their beloved UK. Prioritising regular shows at Londons XOYO and The Nest whilst maintaining a prolific release program on Grand Hotel records.
